Covid-19 Campus Alert Status and Response for 2021-22—Pitzer College is currently in Alert Level 1 (Green)

The Campus Alert Status and Response protocol uses a set of observable conditions to guide College decision-making around health and safety measures for the campus and the community. The College’s alert level status may change depending on a variety of circumstances and conditions. Many factors will be considered when determining changes to alert levels. Some of the factors that will be considered regarding alert level status include, but are not limited to:

  • Student vaccination level
  • Employee vaccination level
  • The number of positive cases on campus
  • The number of students in quarantine or isolation
  • Availability of testing
  • Ability to deliver the academic program
  • Ability to provide essential services
  • Federal, state, and county regulatory guidance
  • Number of employee and student hospitalizations
  • Local hospital capacity
  • Resource availability/shortages (housing,food, cleaning supplies, PPE)
  • Unforeseen financial impacts

ALERT LEVEL 1 (Green)—Low Transmission
Low positivity rate and minimal community spread

This is considered the College’s COVID-19 “normal” level. No new intervention. Here, the College is fully populated with students, faculty, and staff and operating with some basic health and safety protocols in place, such as masking, weekly testing, and social distancing to help mitigate COVID-19. This baseline state of operations may change as the circumstances with COVID-19 improve or if the prevalence of COVID-19 changes on campus, in the region, and in the state.

ALERT LEVEL 2 (Yellow)—Moderate Transmission
Significant rise in cases over previous 1–2 weeks

This alert level indicates that operations need to be modified, though the number of individuals testing positive for COVID-19 is still manageable and contact tracing suggests that exposures are confined to a small number of people. Effective contact tracing remains possible, and there is confidence in the ability to contain, isolate and remediate small clusters. Here, the campus continues to be populated with faculty, staff, and students with adjustments to baseline operations in order to reduce density and in-person contacts. Increased communication on current protocols. If positivity rates continue to increase significantly will implement twice-weekly testing.

ALERT LEVEL 3 (Orange)—Substantial Transmission
Significant and rapid rise in cases with clusters identified by contact tracing

This alert level indicates that on-campus operations must be reduced in response to a rising number of both positive tests and potential exposures. Quarantine and isolation capacity is decreasing and confidence in the ability to complete contact tracing is moderate. As a result, parts of the College or the entire campus community may need to limit movement on campus and minimize in-person contact. Increase testing to twice weekly, decrease in-person class size, limit indoor dining.

ALERT LEVEL 4 (Red)--—High Transmission
Significant and rapid rise in cases with clusters and considerable overall community spread

This alert level indicates the need for significantly reducing campus operations to a minimum, with the possibility of shifting to a remote learning environment. The College moves into this alert level when there is ongoing campus or community transmission occurring at an accelerating rate and there are limited strategies to contain or control the spread of COVID-19. Testing twice weekly for all on campus, and only essential staff on campus.

Each institution of The Claremont Colleges (TCC) will be tracking its own Covid data statistics. The institutions of TCC are also tracking a variety of Covid metrics at the consortium level to share internally as another method of monitoring and responding to the pandemic.

As a college and as a consortium, we are monitoring daily Covid positive rates separately for students and employees, as well as student quarantine rates. We continue to consult with medical experts and are prepared to change operational procedures should we see a significant increase in the rate of cases, the number of total cases, or the utilization of quarantine and isolation spaces. We are building mechanisms for prompt alerts so that we can change course if the health situation worsens. Operational changes may include but not be limited to:

  • Limiting social interaction including gathering policies; restrictions to events and programs to Pitzer community members only; no parties or in-person events or programs
  • Increasing testing; two or three times a week, for instance, in a residence hall or location on campus where several cases cluster or are linked
  • Moving classes to alternative venues, including larger rooms or outdoor classrooms
  • And as a last resort, temporarily switching to online instruction

At this point, we do not envision a scenario in which we would need to close campus.
